SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — A thin blue line flag could be seen waving at a California high school football game despite requests by the local school board and football coach to have it removed earlier this year.
Just before the Saugus High School football team rallied against local high school Golden Valle, a student from Saugus could be seen hoisting the thin blue line flag down the field, FOX News reported.
Mike Kuhlman, superintendent of the William S. Hart Union High School District, released a statement in September specifying why the flag should not be flown at future football games.
“Given that some individuals have expressed concern that they interpret the thin blue line flag to be divisive, it occurred to (the coach) that it’s possible that some players on the team might not be entirely enthusiastic about a symbol that is being used to represent the entire team,” Kuhlman said in a letter to the community.
This isn’t the first time parents and students have expressed their frustration with the decision to remove the flag. Community members joined parents and students at Saugus High to protest the removal in early October by wearing shirts featuring a thin blue line flag with the words “THE BLUE HAD OUR BACKS, NOW WE BACK YOURS!!”
