Large group of happy business people. Success.

‘We love our firm!’

Gunnercooke is doing pretty well for a firm in its twelfth year, with forty five fancy awards to its name — one of them being law firm of the year.

If their cool name and accolades have you feeling like you’re missing out, fret not hypothetical east coast reader. The newcomers from across the pond are entering the New York market.

The move by Gunnercooke comes as several prominent UK-founded law firms, including Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Allen & Overy and Clifford Chance continue to grow in the United States through new offices and hires.

While the firm now has 12 physical offices in the UK, U.S. and Europe, Gunnercooke lawyers have flexibility to work remotely. Like some other law firms, sometimes referred to as “distributed” firms, Gunnercooke’s website says lawyers “can work from anywhere with an internet connection.”

Now that is a hell of a perk. As we all pretend that Covid isn’t still a threat to our well being, it is interesting to take note of how firms balance the incentives of in-person interactions with clear feedback suggesting people would suffer a  20% paycut if it meant staying home. Gunnercooke’s apparent hands off approach is an attractive start for a firm in a new area. Given that they were the first UK firm to accept payments in cryptocurrency, I wouldn’t be surprised if Gunnercooke develops into a New York firm associated with cutting edge developments in work/life balance. Can’t be too difficult when their competition is making waves for letting people turn their cameras off during late night meetings. If they carve out a part of the budget to send their employees Uber Eats credits when they can’t make the in-person luncheons, they’ll probably be getting laterals left and right. The sky is the limit.
