RIALTO, Calif. — Video footage released by the Rialto (Calif.) Police Department shows an armed man in a black Dodge Charger following an officer into a police station parking lot.

According to CBS Los Angeles and the Rialto Police Department, the suspect exited the Charger once in the lot and began jogging toward an officer while carrying what appeared to be an AR-15-style rifle. The man then appears to begin running back in the direction of his own vehicle, but instead turns around and raises the weapon at the officer a second time, prompting the officer to shoot him.

“The brazenness of criminals in today’s society is just overwhelming to me,” Rialto Police Chief Mark Kling said during a press conference. “I’ve been doing this for 37 years and in 37 years, I would never, ever think that somebody would come in armed with some type of weapon and assault our police officers, and I think what is so concerning is it’s just not here inside Rialto. We’re talking everywhere.”

During the press conference, Kling told reporters the department already has new safety procedures in the works: “The good news for the Rialto Police Department is we are in the process of designing and building a brand-new police facility, which will actually handle all the safety issues.”

No officers were injured during the incident. The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment and is expected to survive.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department has opened an investigation into the incident.
