Sheriff’s deputies in Virginia recently came to the rescue of an 1,800-pound draft horse named Juliet that became trapped in a swimming pool.
The Frederick County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from a Green Springs Road residence after the horse crashed through the home’s fence and landed in the pool on the evening of December 2. Responding deputies determined that as Juliet attempted to jump the fence, she knocked over the top rail surrounding the pool and then walked out onto the nylon pool cover, sinking into the freezing water at the deep end of the pool.
Although that end of the pool was nine feet deep, the horse’s head and part of her body managed to stay above water with help from owner Tonya Quental and her daughter, who together lifted Juliet’s head up.
The department said in a Facebook post that Deputy Cram, ACO Deputy Tasker and Sergeant Hawse immediately began to cut the pool cover away from the horse to free her, then put a halter on her and pulled her to the shallow end of the pool. After Juliet rested for a bit, she was then guided up the deck and back into the yard.
The veterinarian who treats the horse advised the homeowner and deputies to dry her as much as possible, keep her warm and active, and feed her more hay. After being cared for, Juliet was fine, but perhaps a bit shocked by the cold plunge.
“You just never know what type of calls we respond to every day. This is one for the books. We are happy that it was witnessed, and we could respond to assist,” Sheriff Lenny Millholland told WHSV.
Millholland said that the deputies had been prepared to enter the frigid water to save the horse if necessary.
