A South Carolina sheriff’s K-9 handler had an emotional reunion with his bloodhound after the K-9 got lost during a training exercise.

According to the York County Sheriff’s Office, K-9 Gunner broke free from his harness and disappeared into the woods around 3 p.m. on December 7 at Kings Mountain State Park.

Dozens of York County deputies, along with members of the Gaston County Police Department and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office, searched for the 3-year-old bloodhound.

Authorities dispatched ATVs and even a helicopter to look for Gunner.

The next morning, the pup was eventually found and returned to his handler, with whom he shared a long hug.

A video posted by the sheriff’s office on social media captured the happy reunion. Gunner greeted his handler with a wagging tale and jumped into his arms.

The York County Sheriff’s Office said Gunner — who belongs to a law enforcement agency based in Virginia — was “cold, wet and thirsty but in good health.”

According to the sheriff’s office, K-9 teams often go to the park to hone the dogs’ tracking skills.
