BATH TOWNSHIP, Mich. — The Bath Township Police Department recently shared portions of bodycam footage from a mobile home park shooting where an officer fatally shot a man after he aimed a gun at his mother and the sergeant.

According to FOX 47 News, police were originally called to the mobile home for a domestic disturbance. The suspect’s mother can be heard on bodycam video telling the responding officer, Sgt. Hamilton, that her son had been expressing suicidal thoughts and needed to be medically evaluated.

“He wants to die today is what he came home at 1 o’clock and told me. For what reason, I have no idea,” she said on the video.

As the mother and officer were talking, the man came out of the home and aimed a handgun in the direction of his mother and the officer. After the suspect ignored commands to drop his gun, the officer shot him. Additional officers arrived on scene and moved the man to the ground to begin CPR, but he died from his injuries.

“This incident is a tragedy for everyone involved. Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased, as well as the officer and his family,” Chief Gary Smith said.

Near the end of the bodycam video, police determined both guns taken from the man were “replicas,” the Lansing State Journal reported. However, no additional details have been provided by the department.

Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting and an internal investigation is taking place. The name and age of suspect has not yet been released.
