SELMA, Calif. — A California police officer was shot and killed after a man fired several shots at him while investigating a homeowner’s trespassing complaint.

Selma Police officer Gonzalo Carrasco was on patrol when a homeowner approached him stating that an unknown man was on their property, according to ODMP.com. As the officer began to search the property, the suspect fired several shots, striking Carrasco and then fleeing the scene.

FOX 3 Now reported that Selma Police officers, Fresno County Sheriff’s deputies, firefighters and Selma EMS responded and provided medical aid to Carrasco. He was transported to a hospital, where he later died.

According to District Attorney Lisa Smittcamp, Carrasco, who was an expectant father, aspired to become a police officer for years, taking part in the explorer program at the Reedley Police Department, and eventually becoming an officer at the Selma PD.

The 23-year-old suspect was arrested a short time after the shooting and charged with murder.

Smittcamp released a statement stating the shooter was a felon and admitted gang member that had been convicted on charges related to robbery, weapons and drugs. According to the DA, in March 2022, he was sentenced by a judge to serve five years and four months in prison. However, because of a law that gives additional credits for time served in jail, he was released five months after his original sentence.
