Fallen Miami-Dade Officer Cesar “Echy” Echaverry Jr. was posthumously honored in a street renaming ceremony on March 20.
The five-year veteran officer was shot while attempting to arrest a robbery suspect on August 15, 2022, and died two days later. Now, a section of Southwest 162nd Avenue near John A. Ferguson High School (where Echaverry was once a student) between Miller Drive and Sunset drive in West Kendall will officially be known as Ofc. Cesar “Echy” Echaverry Jr. Way.
The ceremony was attended by Miami-Dade County officials and state leaders, including Lieutenant Governor Jeanette Nuñez, as well as Echaverry’s parents and fiancée. Law enforcement officers, including the MDPD Robbery Intervention Detail that Echaverry volunteered for, also attended the event. Even the Ferguson High School baseball team, which Echaverry once played for, was present. Police helicopters performed a flyover during the ceremony. Echaverry’s family was presented with two flags, one flown over the U.S. Capitol and another flown over the Florida Capitol, as a tribute to his service and sacrifice.
“It’s tough to sit here at these ceremonies picturing your families sitting here. He was a great representation of our unit, he embodied all the characteristics that we look for in a great robbery intervention detail detective,” fellow MDPD Officer Justin Heller said.
Echaverry’s fiancée, Stephanie Vargas, also spoke during the ceremony.
“The street itself is extremely meaningful as it was the main way to his daily routines, gym, church, my house. His life was truly remarkable,” Vargas said while holding back tears, NBC 6 reported. “His death left us all with an emptiness that no memorial could ever fill. Today’s dedication will never ease the pain of his passing, we’ll remember him every day and do everything we can to honor his memory.”
Miami-Dade Police Department Director Freddy Ramirez spoke about Echaverry, saying, “When you look at 162nd Avenue, you see action. You see a man that gave it all.”
Mayor Daniella Levine Cava stated: “Our county is safer today because of Officer Echaverry and his selflessness because of a sacrifice that we will never, ever forget.”
Miami-Dade County Commissioners Roberto González and Kionne McGee sponsored the legislation that paved the way for the street naming.
