A police officer from Fargo, North Dakota, went through extreme measures to save a great horned owl with a broken wing on March 15.
Although the Fargo Police Department usually does not respond to wildlife calls, Community Service Officer LaVerne Aventi decided to help because the owl was injured and required veterinary assistance.
The Neighborhood Services Division officer first contacted the North Dakota Game and Fish Department to get permission to rescue the bird. After the approval was granted, the officer waded through waist-deep snow to reach the owl, which had taken refuge in a window well of the residence of the 9-1-1 caller. She then used a net to capture the bird and transported it to Chahinkapa Zoo in Wahpeton, which was the closest raptor rehabilitation center, located roughly 50 miles away.
The owl was identified by a tag on its leg as having been born in 2022 in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, and received veterinary care for its broken wing at the zoo.
“CSO Aventi’s willingness to go the extra mile in this situation demonstrates her commitment to the Fargo Police Department’s mission and core value of Guardianship: FPD will guard, protect and preserve all life and property in the Fargo community as well as each other,” the department wrote in a Facebook post.
Community members praised the officer’s actions.
