University of New Orleans (UNO) police officers recently rescued a child from the backseat of a burning car after the driver of the vehicle crashed while fleeing police on the morning of March 27.

According to university spokesperson Adam Norris, at around 7:30 a.m., University of New Orleans Department of Public Safety officers attempted to stop a vehicle for reckless driving. The driver initially stopped, but fled the scene when a second patrol car arrived.

The driver then crashed the car about two miles away. Upon reaching the scene, UNO officers found the vehicle in flames with a child in the backseat. They pulled the child from the car. Both the driver and the child were taken to a hospital by Emergency Medical Services, but their current conditions are unknown.

One person was arrested, police said. New Orleans police did not initiate or participate in the pursuit but helped UNO police make the arrest. There is no available information on the suspect’s name or the charges.
