The Elwood Police Department in Indiana has welcomed the father of fallen officer Noah Shahvanaz to the ranks.

Father Matthew Shahvanaz was sworn in as a reserve officer at the department on March 29 and will wear the same badge number his son wore when he was killed in the line of duty last year.

His son, Noah, was shot and killed during a traffic stop in July 2022 after serving the community for 11 months as an officer and five years in the Army.

The suspect, Carl Roy Boards II, fired 36 rounds from an automatic weapon at Noah and his police cruiser, killing the officer. He was later arrested in a nearby county following a police pursuit.

In tribute to his son, Matthew wears badge number 139, which was Noah’s badge number.

Matthew recently underwent training and a pre-basic course to qualify for the reserve position.

“We are excited for him to help live out Noah’s legacy at our department,” the Elwood Police Department posted on Facebook.

County prosecutors said after the murder that they will seek death penalty for Boards.
