BigLaw partner agrees to pay more than $7.2M to settle allegations of unpaid taxes

A Williams & Connolly partner has agreed to pay more than $7.2 million to settle the federal government’s civil suit for unpaid federal income taxes.
Lawyer Robert Shaughnessy and Susan Shaughnessy, identified as a person living in his home, agreed to pay that amount in a joint motion for consent judgment. Reuters broke the news.
According to the April 17 motion, Robert and Susan Shaughnessy agreed to pay $7,258,580 for unpaid tax liabilities for tax years 2001 through 2006, 2008 through 2011, and 2016. They will also have to pay statutory interest dating back to January 2023.
According to Reuters, Williams & Connolly partners can make more than $2 million a year.
Robert Shaughnessy is a civil litigator whose practice includes commercial torts, false advertising, contract disputes, class actions, trademarks, copyrights, product liability and environmental matters, according to his law firm biography.
Robert Shaughnessy didn’t immediately reply to the ABA Journal’s request for comment made in an email and a voicemail. His lawyer, Jordan D. Howlette, didn’t immediately reply to the ABA Journal’s email requesting comment.
