Report ranks U.S. cities with increased homicide rates in 2023

WASHINGTON — Throughout the past few years, the U.S. homicide rate has surged. However, we now know more insight into just how much the rates have increased, according to a new report from WalletHub.

Homicide rates have risen by an average of roughly 10% in 45 of the most populated U.S. cities between Q1 2021 and Q1 20203. The WalletHub report compares 45 of the largest U.S. cities to identify which cities are grappling with the most significant homicide rate issues. The comparison was based on per capita homicides in Q1 2023, as well as per capita homicides in Q1 2023 compared to Q1 2022 and Q1 2021.

The report ranks the following cities in the top five homicides per capita in 2023: 

1. Memphis, Tenn.
2. New Orleans, La.
3. Baltimore, Md.
4. St. Louis, Mo.
5. Detroit, Mich.

The following cities had the lowest homicides per capita in 2023: 

1. Raleigh, N.C.
2. Omaha, Neb.
3. Madison, Wis.
4. Sacramento, Calif. and Scottsdale, Ariz.
