This BigLaw firm’s ‘modified hybrid work model’ will require 4 days per week in office
Lawyers at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom will have to show up at the office four days per week beginning in September.
The law firm confirmed the policy May 25, report Bloomberg Law, Law.com, Law360 and Above the Law.
Lawyers will have to be in the office Monday through Thursday.
“By affording attorneys the flexibility to work remotely on Fridays and during specified periods throughout the year,” the firm said, “our modified hybrid work model will harness the best aspects of remote working while fueling innovation and professional development through more frequent in-person collaboration.”
Remote work periods include Thanksgiving week and the period between Christmas and New Year’s Day, according to Above the Law.
Currently, Skadden reportedly requires in-office attendance Tuesday through Thursday, Law360 and Bloomberg Law said.
About 90% of the nation’s top grossing firms encourage or require in-office attendance for a set number of days each week, according to a January report by Savills Inc. cited by Law360. Sixty-seven percent of the firms encourage or require lawyers to be in the office three days per week.
Many firms told Savills that they have implemented “anchor days,” when every team member must come into the office. The most common anchor days are Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Firms requiring in-office attendance Tuesday through Thursday include Davis Polk & Wardwell; Milbank; and Simpson Thacher & Bartlett, according to Bloomberg Law. And some firms are tying attendance to bonuses.
