Port St. Lucie P.D.

Two Port St. Lucie police officers are being recognized for their bravery after rescuing an 87-year-old man from a precarious situation following a car accident near a canal bank in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

The incident took place on the night of June 9 in an area off Southeast Becker Road, just east of Florida’s Turnpike, after an accident left an elderly man on the verge of being crushed by his vehicle.

Police initiated the rescue mission after receiving a phone call and general location from the man. K-9 Officer Cory Krecic recounted the incident.

“He was telling his daughter that he was in the water somewhere.”

With the assistance of a St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office helicopter, the officers were able to locate the man and his tilting car in the Veranda Falls area on Becker Road.

Officer Krecic and Officer Carson Perkins swiftly reacted to the sight of the vehicle, which seemed about to roll over the trapped man.

“He was sitting, actually, right underneath it and it was moving a little bit, so even the air unit was able to see that it looked like it was going to roll,” Krecic explained.

Without hesitation, the officers sprang into action, racing to the scene and successfully pulling the disoriented yet cooperative elderly man away from danger.

Following the heroic rescue, the man was taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition and without significant injuries.

Officer Krecic expressed his relief.

“It was nice to get him out and to get him to safety, get him to the fire rescue. He actually had a smile on his face when he was away from everything.”

Police later acknowledged that the collaboration between multiple law enforcement agencies — including the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office and the Port St. Lucie Department — played a crucial role in ensuring the successful outcome of the rescue mission.
