Deputies from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in Nevada demonstrated their resourcefulness when confronted with an unusual situation involving a bear.
According to Facebook post from the sheriff’s office, residents in the Lake Tahoe area alerted authorities to a bear trapped inside a car.
“You never know what a call may bring,” the agency said in the post.
Deputies responded promptly to the call and devised a clever plan to free the trapped animal. In a video shared on social media, a brave law enforcement officer could be seen tying one end of a length of bright yellow twine around the car’s door handle, then tying the twine to another length of rope to create a safe distance between themselves and the vehicle.
With the arrangement in place, they gently pulled the string from behind a distant tree, successfully opening the car door. The footage captured the moment the bear escaped from confinement and dashed off into the nearby woods.
Accompanying the video were photographs depicting the significant damage inflicted upon the car by the bear.
In the comments, netizens cracked a few jokes about the bizarre occurrence.
“Hope it was a rental car!” one person commented.
“Thank God there is video for the insurance claim,” someone else joked.
Additionally, officials highlighted the active presence of bears in the Tahoe region during the springtime and urged visitors to exercise caution and bear awareness when enjoying the outdoors, while taking steps to prevent encounters.
“Be mindful of food wrappers, coolers and scented items in vehicles. Avoid leaving food in cars. Don’t leave garbage outside, and dispose of trash inside (not next to) bear-proof designated receptacles,” the agency advised. “Do not feed the bears!”
