LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky State Police released body-worn camera video showing a man attempting to carjack an undercover police officer.

In the video, a masked individual, later identified by the family as Mark Jaggers Jr., can be seen walking in front of an unmarked police car toward the driver’s door, WDRB reports. Officer Matt Hayden swiftly opens the door and loudly declares, “Police!” He then discharges three shots.

After the shooting, Hayden can be heard asking Jaggers, “What is your deal, bro?”

“I wasn’t trying to rob you,” Jaggers responded.

According to interim Chief Jackie Gwinn-Villaroel, the two officers in the vehicle promptly attempted to provide medical assistance. Jaggers succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

Gwinn-Villaroel said the officers were in the area for an unrelated investigation.

“Based on bodycam footage, Mr. Jaggers was armed when he opened the driver’s side door of the police vehicle and when the bullets fired by Officer Hayden struck him,” Kentucky State Police Public Affairs Commander Capt. Paul Blanton said.
