KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — A good Samaritan came to the aid of a state trooper suffering from heat exhaustion on Monday.

According to the State Highway Patrol, a trooper collapsed at the Exxon station on the corner of South Smithfield Road and Poor Boy Farm Road in Knightdale just after 11 a.m.

A bystander saw the trooper suffering a “heat-related medical event” and used the trooper’s radio to call for help.

First responders arrived soon after, and the trooper was taken to a nearby medical facility and is in good condition.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory in Raleigh and Durham. The local heat index could reach up to 108.

“I am unbelievably proud of those willing to step up at a moment’s notice to help one of our members in need,” said Colonel Freddy Johnson, Jr. “Those who provided medical attention and made the call to alert first responders acted heroically. We are extremely grateful for their willingness to take action and for getting involved ensuring a positive recovery for our member.”

During extreme heat, the National Weather Service recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in an air-conditioned room and staying out of the sun.
