A merger isn’t out of the question for Stroock & Stroock & Lavan, even though it has ended talks about the possibility with Nixon Peabody.

“While we have great mutual respect for what we each offer the marketplace, together we decided that further talks are not in the best interests of either firm,” according to Stroock’s announcement, which was published by Reuters, Bloomberg Law and Law.com.

“Our discussions with Nixon Peabody were never exclusive,” the statement continued. “We have continued talks with other firms, we are making good progress with them and are excited about the opportunities they present.”

Stroock has been looking for a merger partner since it lost 43 restructuring lawyers to Paul Hastings in May 2022, according to Law.com.

Nixon Peabody also released a statement. “We have discussions regularly with other law firms on matters relating to the profession and areas of mutual interest,” the statement said. “In the ordinary course, we consider growth opportunities that are consistent with our strategic objectives and in the best interests of our clients.”

Updated at 1:50 p.m. to include statement from Nixon Peabody.
