A routine traffic stop turned into a chaotic scene on July 8 after a 47-year-old drunk man, Jamal Wing, allegedly resisted arrest by assaulting law enforcement officers and even biting a police dog, as reported by Delaware State Police.

The incident began when a state trooper noticed a black 2021 Toyota Camry speeding down the Philadelphia Pike near Rolling Road. The trooper immediately initiated a traffic stop, and the Camry pulled into a nearby parking lot.

However, upon being pulled over, Wing exited his vehicle without any prompting and refused to comply with the troopers’ instructions to return to his car.

In an effort to detain him, troopers called for backup and a K-9 unit. The police dog, named K-9 Mako, attempted to assist in the apprehension, but as the situation escalated, the msn resorted to biting the K-9 dog multiple times.

“Wing continued to resist and bit the DSP K-9 multiple times,” DSP said.

Eventually, the troopers managed to subdue him, but not without sustaining injuries themselves. During the arrest, the man reportedly received multiple injuries, including a gash above his left eye. He was subsequently taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

Despite being under medical care, Wing persisted in his efforts to escape custody and assaulted a trooper, resulting in additional injuries to the officer and damage to police property.

Upon release from the hospital, Wing was charged with multiple crimes, including two counts of assaulting a police officer, one count assaulting a law enforcement animal, driving under the influence, two counts of resisting with force or violence, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct, failure to have required insurance and speeding in excess of posted limits, as well as duty to sign and carry a license.

Wing is currently being held at the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution on a bail of $34,200 cash.

The Delaware State Police issued a reminder to the public about the importance of obeying law enforcement instructions during traffic stops and emphasized the severe consequences of resisting arrest and assaulting officers.

The case will proceed through the legal system as Wing faces the charges against him, which include felonies for assaulting a police officer and a law enforcement animal, in addition to DUI and resisting arrest charges.
