Alabama police arrested an 8-year-old boy on Tuesday morning, July 11, after the minor allegedly carjacked an adult at gunpoint and led authorities on a dramatic police chase before crashing the stolen car into another vehicle.
The young boy, whose identity has not been disclosed, is facing multiple criminal charges and is now in custody at the Montgomery County Youth Detention Facility.
According to Montgomery police, the incident began at around 11 a.m. when police received a report of a robbery on West Fairview Avenue.
To their surprise, officers learned that the suspect was an 8-year-old boy wielding a firearm. The child reportedly confronted an adult, threatening them with the gun before making off with the victim’s vehicle.
Officers quickly spotted the underage driver and attempted to pull him over. However, the child refused to stop and instead accelerated, initiating a chase that led authorities through the busy streets of Montgomery. Witness accounts indicate that during the pursuit, the boy picked up two adults, further escalating the gravity of the situation.
Fearing for the safety of the community and the boy himself, a concerned citizen known as “Snake” Knapp witnessed the events and decided to tail the stolen car.
His immediate concern was to ensure no one got hurt during the chase.
“Whenever I realized it was a little boy, I knew I had to follow them and make sure no one got hit and that he got caught because don’t want him driving all over Montgomery, causing more accidents or hurting himself or hurting other people,” Knapp later told WSFA News.
The chase ultimately ended when the boy crashed the stolen vehicle into another car at the intersection of West Fairview Avenue and South Court Street. Miraculously, no injuries were reported from the collision.
Law enforcement immediately apprehended the 8-year-old boy, taking him into custody. A firearm, the alleged weapon used during the carjacking, was also recovered at the scene. The child now faces serious charges including first-degree robbery, attempting to elude and possession of a firearm by a person forbidden to possess one. It remains uncertain at this point whether the gun was owned by the boy’s family or how he acquired it.
Reflecting on the incident, Knapp stressed the importance of parental vigilance and communication.
“I think parents just really need to know where their kids are, what their kids are doing, and just talk to them about these kinds of things.”
As the legal process unfolds, Montgomery residents are left grappling with the startling reality of an 8-year-old boy involved in such a serious criminal act. Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, aiming to understand how such a young child ended up embroiled in this dangerous escapade.
