A routine Mondary morning commute turned into an unforgettable memory for two Port Authority police officers after they helped a pregnant woman successfully deliver a baby boy on the road outside Lincoln Tunnel.
According to the PAPD, Lincoln Tunnel toll plaza officers Timothy Jozefczyk and Evan Butt provided timely and critical assistance in delivering the child.
The bundle of joy, named Kylian Aaron Guallpa Castano, surprised his parents, Maria Marin and Nestor Guallpa, by arriving ahead of his due date.
The dramatic situation took place as the expectant parents were en route to a hospital. Nestor, who was driving, noticed his wife, Maria, experiencing complications and immediately sought help. Flagging down nearby Port Authority officers, he anxiously pleaded for assistance as his wife began bleeding.
Officer Timothy Jozefczyk was the first to respond to the scene. Showing remarkable composure, Jozefczyk assumed the role of a seasoned medical professional, donning gloves and calmly instructing Maria during the delivery process.
“He was looking like a doctor. He put on the gloves and he had the control, and saying to her, ‘Push! Push!’” recalled Nestor.
Within three minutes, thanks to the efforts of Officer Jozefczyk, a healthy baby boy was born, weighing 6 pounds and 9 ounces.
“They’re our heroes,” Guallpa said. “It was like something out of a movie, and I will never forget this experience.”
Jozefczyk reflected on the climactic moment.
“I put my hands near the baby’s head,” Jozefczyk said. “I instructed ‘keep pushing, keep pushing, keep pushing.’”
The officers and parents were relieved as little Kylian let out his first cries.
Officer Butt arrived shortly after, bringing further assistance and expertise to the scene.
A former NYPD medic, Officer Butt assisted in the remainder of the delivery process and skillfully clamped the umbilical cord.
Of note, Butt is a veteran in such situations, having previously assisted in four child deliveries.
Days later, Officers Jozefczyk and Butt had the privilege of reuniting with the family at Hoboken University Medical Center. The mother and baby were both in good health, and the family expressed their heartfelt gratitude to the officers who made Kylian’s birth a truly special and memorable event.
“It was, like, incredible! Incredible! I said he was an angel,” beamed Nestor, reflecting on the officers’ heroic actions.
Officer Jozefczyk, who had not only helped deliver his first baby but also held a newborn for the first time, expressed his relief and happiness.
“I was so relieved when the baby cried, and so happy that everyone is healthy,” he said.
As the officers left the hospital, they expressed their hope to someday become fathers themselves.
