STOCKTON, Calif. — The Stockton Police Department released harrowing body-worn camera footage that captured the moment an officer was shot while responding to a carjacking on Wednesday.

The unidentified sergeant, a nine-year veteran of the Stockton PD, was shot multiple times, including “square in the chest,” while responding to a call by a 69-year-old carjacking victim, KCRA.com reported. The sergeant’s ballistic vest saved his life, Stockton Police Chief Stanley McFadden said in a press conference.

“It’s a call that no parent, no chief, no one, wants to get in the middle of the night,” McFadden said. “Had an officer down. This is a gut-wrenching call that you don’t want to hear.”

McFadden said the sergeant was in “good spirits” when he met with him in the hospital.

“He’s eager to get back to work, but he has got some healing to do,” McFadden continued.

Sunthawon “Benny” Savon, 20, was arrested in connection with the carjacking and shooting. He was booked on charges related to carjacking, attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon, fleeing from a peace officer and possession of a stolen vehicle. According to police, Savon was arrested in January on weapons-related charges.
