FONTANA, Calif. — A man who was shot and killed by police after reportedly firing shots and acting distraught on a golf course was identified as an off-duty Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy, KTLA reports.

Authorities received a 911 call that a man was in a dispute at a house near the Sierra Lakes Golf Club. The caller said the man was distraught and drinking before he allegedly fired shots into the wall of a home. The caller stated the man left the house and went to the golf course carrying two guns.

A witness said the man fired multiple shots while walking onto the golf course.

“Just started shooting. Shooting up everything. Scaring the golfers, shooting at the police,” neighbor Myesha Dowe told KTLA.

It has not been confirmed if shots were fired by the suspect on the course or if any shots were fired at Fontana Police Department officers.

A man, who was later verified to be an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy by a police sergeant at the scene, was engaged by the police and subsequently shot.

The off-duty deputy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

“The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is deeply saddened to hear of the tragic shooting incident involving our off-duty deputy who passed away yesterday. We are in close communication with Fontana Police Department and the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department as they conduct their ongoing investigation. This incident is extremely difficult for the family, our personnel and the officers involved,” a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
