A police officer with the Boulder Police Department (BPD) has recently welcomed an unexpected member into his family after adopting a dog he encountered while on duty.
Several weeks ago, Officer Nate Taylor and a fellow officer stumbled upon a stolen car while on duty.
After apprehending the suspects responsible, their attention was drawn to an unexpected occupant in the backseat — a dog, looking up at them through the window.
The poignant moment was captured in a video posted on the BPD’s X account.
Approaching the dog with caution, the officers wondered aloud if she was friendly.
Taking a risk, they extended their hands to let her sniff and eventually managed to coax her out of the car.
The officers then named her “Miss Bonnie” and took her to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley, leaving their contact information in case her owners would come forward.
A week later, Officer Taylor received a call from the humane society, informing him that no one had claimed Bonnie. It was then that Officer Taylor and his husband made the heartwarming decision to make Bonnie a permanent member of their family.
This addition brought their household to a harmonious family of four, including their two dachshunds.
“Once she realized her size in comparison to the two other small pups, Bonnie transitioned into the pack smoothly. She’s been just the cutest thing,” Officer Taylor reflected.
The heartwarming story has since captured the attention of the community, garnering approximately 28,800 views and 365 likes on social media.
Officer Taylor’s story displayed the human side of officers, proving that they can show compassion and empathy as well.
Newsweek reached out to the Boulder Police Department for comment on Officer Taylor’s adoption of Bonnie, but further details were not provided.
