MESA, Ariz. — Body-worn camera video from the Mesa Police Department shows the moment officers confronted an armed suspect with non-lethal rounds from a moving cruiser.

The incident took place on Aug. 3. Officers, along with members of the U.S. Marshals Arizona Wanted Task Force, were driving in a residential area looking for a suspect who was wanted in connection with several armed robberies, according to the department.

Real-time crime center video shows the suspect, identified as Ny’Kendreon Pride, walking near an apartment complex on a sidewalk.

Body camera video and surveillance video from the area shows officers pulling their cruiser up to the sidewalk and making contact with Pride.

A detective, who was riding in the back passenger side of the cruiser, fired a flash bang near Pride while another detective, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, yelled for Pride to get down on the ground, video shows.

While the cruiser was moving, the back seat detective fired two bean bag rounds and the front seat detective, who saw Pride reach for a gun, fired rounds from his rifle, police said.

Pride then attempted to flee from the scene while holding a handgun. Officers got out of the cruiser and gave several commands for Pride to drop his weapon, but he did not respond.

Officers then used a TASER, pepper ball rounds and bean bag rounds in an effort to get Pride to drop his weapon.

Officers approached Pride, removed his handgun and took him into custody.

Pride was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
