Bet Gordon Ramsey Feels Like An Idiot Sandwich For Letting This Happen To His Pub

We send out a memo each year that we have a tolerant and respectful work environment. That doesn’t mean we are going to say if these students were involved in these organizations that they can’t be here. But we are asking people to pay them a lot of money for their critical thinking skills. If their critical thinking skills land them in that place [blaming the victims of the terror for the terror], then they have no place here.

— Joseph Shenker, senior chair of Sullivan & Cromwell, in comments given to the American Lawyer on the law students who saw their offers of employment rescinded at Winston & Strawn and Davis Polk & Wardwell after making or signing on to controversial statements concerning the Hamas terror attack in Israel. Shenker was in Israel celebrating Simchat Torah when Hamas struck, and found refuge in a Jerusalem synagogue’s bomb shelter. This is a “deeply personal” issue for Shenker, who explained to Am Law that revenge is not the way forward. “You have to feel their pain,” he said. “But never take revenge. Feel empathy, protect others and feel part of the human whole.”
