In Brief: All About The Minimum Wage

Minimum wage is the lowest pay rate that employers are allowed to offer employees in Ontario. The minimum wage is a floor and no employer can go below it.

The minimum wage applies to most Ontario workers (but not all workers), including workers working full-time, part-time, casually, or whether they are paid by the hour, commission, per piece, a flat rate, or a salary.

The minimum wage in Ontario in 2024 is $16.55 per hour (source).

The minimum wage in Ontario in 2024 is up $1.05 since 2023, or 6.8%.

In 2023, the minimum wage in Ontario was $15.50.

The 2024 Ontario minimum wage came into effect on October 1, 2023.

Ontario’s new minimum wage makes it the highest in Canada as of the date this article was published.

Nearly 1,000,000 Ontario workers earn minimum wage, mostly in retail and food preparation.

Minimum Wage Next Year

The minimum wage changes every year in October generally, and it is changed based on increases in the Ontario Consumer Price Index.

Expect Ontario’s minimum wage to increase again in 2025 because, as we all know, inflation (e.g. the Ontario Consumer Price Index) is increasing at historical rates.
