HENRY COUNTY, Ga. — The Henry County Sheriff’s Office is mourning a deputy who died Tuesday after feeling ill at work.
Sgt. Sean Free, 41, was in a classroom at the gun range when he suddenly felt nauseated, according to WSB-TV. He was taken to a hospital where he died.
Friends and former co-workers told 11 Alive News that Free died of heatstroke, but the sheriff’s office denied those reports in a Facebook post.
“Erroneously, it has been circulating on social media that Sgt. Free died from a heat stroke,” the agency wrote. “Cause of death has not been concluded at this time and will be determined by The Medical Examiner’s Office.”
Free was a 16-year veteran of the sheriff’s office. He was remembered for his dedication and loyalty.
“Free was known amongst his friends to have a smile that lit up any room and as an outspoken proponent for his friends,” the agency wrote. “His dedication to his companions was rivaled only by his dedication to law enforcement and his great faith.”
