New York Police Department (NYPD) officers recently went above and beyond the call of duty to save the life of a lost and blind border collie that got stuck in a frigid pond on Halloween.
The 8-year-old border collie, named Sparky, was found stranded and struggling in the cold waters of Baisley Pond in South Jamaica, Queens, after several 9-1-1 calls alerted the NYPD to the situation.
The officers, identified as Officer Williams and Officer Esposito from the 113 Precinct, arrived on the scene equipped with body cameras, which captured the dramatic rescue operation.
The footage was subsequently shared on the NYPD’s official YouTube channel and Facebook account, where it gained widespread attention.
In the video, Officer Williams and Officer Esposito wade through the thick vegetation in the pond’s frigid, marshy waters. It remains unclear how long Sparky had been in the water, but the dog appeared exhausted and silent when the officers reached him.
One of the officers can be heard comforting the distressed K-9, saying: “Pup, you’re OK, you’re OK.” To rescue Sparky, the officers used a long stick to clear the branches that were obstructing his path. However, the dog did not respond or move.
Eventually, the officers successfully reached Sparky, carefully lifted him from the waist-deep water, and carried him to dry land. After the rescue, Sparky was placed inside an NYPD vehicle and wrapped in a jacket to keep him warm.
As one officer covered Sparky with the coat, he mentioned: “I can’t feel anything,” before instructing his colleague to “blast the heat” to ensure the dog’s comfort.
Following the daring rescue, Sparky was promptly taken to a local veterinarian, where he was joyfully reunited with his owner.
The story of Sparky’s rescue has touched the hearts of countless social media users, with the video garnering over 23,000 views and numerous heartfelt comments.
People expressed their gratitude and admiration for the officers’ quick thinking and heroism, applauding their efforts to save a vulnerable and precious pup.
