Voters in Ohio earlier this year overwhelmingly backed an amendment to enshrine abortion rights in their state’s constitution, but Republicans in the state are plotting to thwart their wishes.

News 5 Cleveland reports that some Republicans in the Ohio state legislature are now going all-in on backing a total abortion ban that would only have exceptions to save a woman’s life but not for women who were impregnated due to rape or incest.

At the center of the effort is anti-abortion advocate Austin Beigel, who is working with several anti-abortion Republicans on crafting the ban.

While talking with reporters, Beigel acknowledged that this bill would contradict the will of the voters but said that didn’t matter because voters made an “immoral” choice last month.

“It would be going against the majority of the voters, yes, I fully acknowledge that,” Beigel said. “Voters can decide to do things that are immoral and evil. That has been a deeply historical part of our country and the majority of people have desired evil at many times in our culture’s history.”

News 5 Cleveland notes that Beigel’s bill “is currently being discussed in the ‘Pro-Life Caucus,’ a group of 27 Republicans inside the Ohio House” and that “there is at least one sponsor and several other cosponsors,” according to Beigel’s tally.
