The Stanley drinking cup craze reached new levels after a 23-year-old woman was apprehended for allegedly stealing 65 of the prized stainless-steel tumblers, valued at nearly $2,500, from a store in Roseville, California.

Police responded to a report of theft at a retail store on January 17 on Stanford Ranch Road after store employees observed a woman take a shopping cart filled with Stanley cups without paying for them. When confronted, the woman reportedly refused to cooperate with staff and proceeded to load her car with the stolen merchandise.

An officer spotted the suspect’s vehicle on Highway 65 and initiated a traffic stop. Upon inspection, law enforcement discovered the trunk and passenger seat of the car overflowing with various sizes and styles of Stanley cups.

The 23-year-old suspect, hailing from Sacramento, was arrested for grand theft. Authorities have chosen not to disclose her identity at this time.

Despite the Stanley brand being in existence since 1913, the frenzy over its cups has gained momentum in recent months, driven largely by social media influencers. The Quencher cup — which holds 40 fluid ounces, comes in numerous colors and styles, and retails at $45 on the Stanley website — has in particular gained a cult-like following across the globe.

“While Stanley Quenchers are all the rage, we strongly advise against turning to crime to fulfill your hydration habits,” the Roseville Police Department said on Facebook.
