After a valiant battle against cancer spanning more than a year, K-9 Zoltan bid farewell to his duties with the Lancaster City Bureau of Police on February 4.

The 9-year-old German Shepherd, cross-trained in patrol and narcotics detection, served his final shift with B Platoon, with heartfelt sentiments coming from his colleagues and the community.

The announcement of Zoltan’s retirement was made through a post on the police department’s Facebook page.

“With a heavy heart, we are announcing K-9 Zoltan’s retirement. Due to advancing cancer, Zoltan’s final shift with the Lancaster City Police was yesterday,” the post read.

Zoltan’s battle with B-cell lymphoma had been a challenging journey, with moments of remission followed by relapses. Officer Hatfield, Zoltan’s handler, stood by his loyal companion throughout the ordeal, providing unwavering support during the K-9’s second round of cancer treatment at PETS Hospital.

Officer Hatfield, along with the Lancaster City Police Bureau and Zoltan’s veterinary care providers, collectively agreed that retirement was in Zoltan’s best interest, given his health condition.

The decision marked the end of an illustrious career marked by dedication and exceptional service to the community.

In the heartfelt Facebook post, the Lancaster City Police Bureau showed gratitude for Zoltan’s contributions.
“We’d like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Zoltan for his dedication and exceptional service to the Bureau and our community,” the post stated.

Zoltan’s partnership with Officer Hatfield spanned eight years, during which they formed an unbreakable bond while working and playing together.

Zoltan’s role extended beyond routine duties as he played a pivotal role in various law enforcement operations, including successful narcotic searches leading to felony arrests.

Among Zoltan’s notable achievements was the discovery of a storage unit filled with marijuana and aiding the PSP Vice in locating half a kilo of cocaine.

Additionally, Zoltan demonstrated his prowess in tracking down missing individuals and apprehending suspects involved in crimes, earning him admiration and respect within the department and the community.

The Lancaster City Police Bureau emphasized the significant impact of Zoltan’s service, stating, “Our community is safer and stronger thanks to Zoltan’s commitment to duty, honor, and courage.”

As Zoltan embarks on his well-deserved retirement, the Lancaster City Police Bureau requested the community to keep Zoltan, Officer J. Hatfield, and their family in their thoughts and prayers.
