Whether it’s real estate or cereal, California ain’t cheap. Surprisingly, California lawyers look to be getting a break on one of the costs of doing business: bar dues. Coverage comes from Reuters:

State Bar of California trustees on Thursday voted to pursue a $125 increase in the mandatory fees attorneys will pay in 2025 — lower than the $150 jump they indicated they would seek earlier this month.

State Bar Executive Director Leah Wilson previously warned trustees that state legislators could view an annual $150 as too high, and she said on Thursday that some projected future costs have gone down. The legislature must approve the mandatory fees California lawyers pay to stay licensed.

If you were one of the lawyers that began panicking after reading this, congrats on the good news! For everyone else, whatever price increase the bar decides on will probably be the same as a slew of Uber Eats charges — tighten your belt, develop your practice, and you’ll likely be fine. Still nice to know that it won’t be as bad as it could have been.
