The Charlotte County, Florida, Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) reacted humorously to a jokester’s prank of putting a “For Sale” sign on one of its patrol vehicles.
The CCSO shared a photo of the white Ford in question parked in the grass median of a local road in Englewood on its Facebook page on March 18, along with a few jokes poking fun at the prankster.
“Kinda disappointed in the minimal interest in this beautiful vehicle. Despite its high mileage and idling hours, this baby has lots of life left and plenty of stories to tell … This car has been through it all and keeps on going,” the CCSO wrote. “Sure, the leg room in the back is minimal and the rear seats aren’t all that comfortable, but real friends sit up front anyway!”
The CCSO concluded its post by clarifying that the vehicle was not actually up for sale and gently reminding the public of the seriousness of respecting law enforcement resources.
The vehicle had been parked with the intent of deterring speeders in the area, a mission somewhat foiled by the playful sign.
The community’s response to the CCSO’s post was overwhelmingly positive, with hundreds praising the department’s lighthearted reaction.
“I was waiting for this post! Glad to see people still have a sense of humor, on both ends! PS whoever is in charge of these posts needs a raise!!” one Facebook user commented.
Another community member appreciated the friendly approach, writing, “I’m so glad y’all took this with a light heart! I love our ‘small’ town!”
The CCSO clarified to McClatchy News that while placing signs on vehicles is not inherently illegal, not unlike placing a flyer under windshield wipers, the agency advises against tampering with law enforcement vehicles.
“… The vehicle is parked for a purpose and we want to make sure people understand that it is best not to mess with it because they do not know what that purpose may be,” the sheriff’s office told reporters.
