Texas bonus money cashEverything is bigger in Texas, including Biglaw’s presence. Which large law firm is the latest to lasso up lawyers in the Lone Star State?

After opening its first Texas office two years ago in Dallas, Nelson Mullins — a firm that took in $727,916,000 gross revenue in 2022, putting it at No. 68 in the Am Law 100 — announced earlier this week that it has opened a second Texas outpost, this one in Houston, and that it’s being staffed by partners poached from other Biglaw firms. To that end, the Nelson Mullins Houston office will be led by Craig Dillard, who currently serves as co-head of Foley & Lardner’s oil and gas practice in addition to the firm’s local litigation practice group.

Reuters has details on what Nelson Mullins hopes to achieve in Texas:

The firm, in announcing its Houston office, said it is looking to expand its work in the energy, private equity and healthcare sectors. Firm managing partner Jim Lehman said Nelson Mullins has “significant clients” in Houston, but he declined to identify them. …

Lehman said he expects Nelson Mullins to have 100 lawyers in Texas within the next three to four years. The firm’s Dallas office has grown from nine lawyers in one location to 32 lawyers in two Dallas-based offices, a spokesperson said.

Congratulations to Nelson Mullins on its latest home on the range!
