2023-24 Satter Fellow: Aizhan Tilenbaeva
HRP is delighted to announce the 2023-24 Satter Fellow Aizhan Tilenbaeva LLM ’22.
Aizhan is a human rights and international humanitarian lawyer from Kyrgyzstan. During her Satter fellowship, she will begin with a six-month placement at Global Rights Compliance in Ukraine, concentrating her efforts on promoting justice and accountability as part of the project “Support for Mobile Justice Teams.”
She previously worked at the International Committee of the Red Cross in Kyrgyzstan from 2015 to 2021. She advised the ICRC mission on matters of international humanitarian law, like detention and torture, and analyzed Kyrgyzstan’s national penitentiary legislation for its compliance with international human rights standards. She also served as a Research Fellow at the Max Planck Foundation for International Peace and the Rule of Law, conducting extensive research on counterterrorism and human rights issues in Central Asia. Moreover, Aizhan has brought her expertise to the International Bar Association’s Human Rights Institute, focusing on supporting national preventive mechanisms against ill-treatment in Kyrgyzstan. She has also engaged with academic circles, contributing to teaching and research on International Humanitarian Law.
Aizhan obtained her Bachelor’s degree in International and Business Law from the American University of Central Asia and later pursued a Master of Arts in Human Rights from the School of Advanced Study, University of London. She continued her academic journey with an LL.M. completed in 2022 at Harvard Law School. During her time at Harvard, Aizhan contributed to a catalogue of the United Nations Security Council’s practice pertaining to the environment as a Research Assistant at the Program of International Law and Armed Conflict. Additionally, Aizhan served as a Submissions Editor at the Harvard Human Rights Journal and engaged in clinical work with the Cyberlaw Clinic based at Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society.
