LYNDHURST, N.J. — A standoff that locked down a New Jersey neighborhood for nearly two days ended peacefully with the suspect in custody, News 12 reported on Wednesday. At one point, the suspect used a flamethrower to threaten SWAT officers, video shows.
In a shaky cellphone video, a man can be seen shooting a long tongue of flame near SWAT officers. Luckily, no one was hurt.
The standoff began Tuesday when police tried to execute a court order to seize illegal guns from the home of Robert Condit, 51, NBC New York reported. Condit refused to surrender the weapons and instead barricaded himself. A SWAT team and the FBI responded, and officers deployed gas canisters overnight, the report said.
Neighbors were told to shelter in place Tuesday and Wednesday until Condit surrendered, according to NJ.com.
“After 21 hours, he realized [surrendering] was the best course of action for him,” Capt. Michael Carrino told NBC New York.
Police say Condit will undergo a medical evaluation. Charges are pending.
