New Hampshire State Police recently arrested a Corvette driver for going 161 mph in a 70-mph zone and charged him with two counts of reckless driving.
Police say that State Trooper Shawn Slaney initially spotted the orange sports car zoom by on the I-93 near Ashland, clocking it at 161 mph on his radar gun — a stunning 90 mph over the 70-mph speed limit.
The trooper was not able to catch up with the car due to its “high rate of speed” and alerted local police departments in the area through a be on the lookout (BOLO) alert.
Minutes later, calls came in over police radio citing “multiple sports cars, including the orange car, driving erratically at high rates of speed, nearly causing crashes,” according to a Facebook post from the state police.
An officer with the Woodstock Police Department heard the broadcast and waited on the highway 22 miles down the highway from Ashland for the car to pass on its joy ride. State police said that this time, the Corvette was recorded driving at a speed of 130 mph.
The same officer located the car down the road at Exit 32, where it was stuck in traffic. He was then finally able to stop the car.
Trooper Slaney arrived shortly after and arrested the driver, handing him a summons for two counts of reckless driving and one count of disobeying an officer.
The driver was identified as Alejandro Zapata-Rebello, a 30-year-old from Danbury, Connecticut. Zapata-Rebello awaits a court date in Plymouth court on September 22.
According to Chevrolet, the Corvette’s top speed is 194 mph.
