WASHINGTON — A special police officer died last week after she was shot by a retired police lieutenant during a baton training session at the Anacostia Library in D.C.

Maurica Manyan, 25, had gathered with the group of trainees, who were “joking around” and teasing Manyan throughout the training session, to take a picture. The retired lieutenant, Jesse Porter, pulled his gun from his holster and shot Manyan in the chest, WTOP.com reported. Manyan was rushed to the hospital, where she died.

“I thought I had my training gun. Why did I do this? Is she OK?” Porter asked an officer who responded to the scene. Porter has been charged with involuntary manslaughter.

At one point during the training session, Porter pointed an orange training firearm at Manyan to simulate shooting her, a trainee told police. The same trainee said Porter was “playing around” so “as to not make the training dry,” according to WTOP.

After the shooting, Porter, who trainees said looked “distraught” and “remorseful,” and other trainees administered CPR on Manyan. Manyan leaves behind a 4-year-old son.

A preliminary hearing for Porter is scheduled for September 1.
