EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. — A deputy who responded to a shooting was shot and killed Sunday night after a suspect opened fire.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Andrew Peery, 39, was among three officers who responded to a 911 call near a high school.

“We had additional callers who were also hearing gunfire in the same area. Two of our deputies, alongside a Fountain police officer, arrived on scene almost simultaneously. As soon as they arrived, they were immediately met with gunfire,” Sheriff Bill Elder told KKTV.com.

Peery, a six-year veteran with the sheriff’s office, was shot and later died of his injuries. He leaves behind his wife and two children.

“Our deputies returned fire with at least one round, and after additional personnel arrived on scene, they immediately rendered aid and lifesaving measures,” Elder continued.

After the shooting, the suspect, John Paz, remained at large. However, police later found him dead, according to KKTV.com. The incident remains under investigation.

The procession for our fallen Deputy Sheriff will start at 8:30pm from Memorial Hospital. It will proceed to Nevada and go in front of the Sheriff’s Office on Vermijo. From there it will go to I-25 to the Coroner’s Office. Please line the streets with your flags for the family.

We are very sad to share news that #EPCSO Deputy Andrew Peery was killed in the line of duty. He was a Kern native & previously employed at @bakersfieldpd. His late father, David Peery, was an officer at #LAPD & later a KCDA Investigator. Our hearts & prayers are w/ the family. https://t.co/FD91cMOoR1
