Downtown Miami skyline along waterfront seen through palm tress in South FloridaBiglaw firms now have a relatively big presence in Miami, and those that have recently arrived to the area are looking for new blood through OCI and lateral recruitment that will make their firms even hotter than the Magic City’s weather.

In fact, four of the city’s latest entrants — Kirkland & Ellis, Sidley Austin, Winston & Strawn, and Quinn Emanuel — are actively seeking out Florida law students to serve as summer associates for next year. The American Lawyer has the details:

Sidley Austin has interviewed 2Ls across the country for its 2023 Miami summer program in a variety of practice areas, management committee chair Yvette Ostolaza said in a statement. The firm looks to bring in 12 summer associates for the inaugural program.

Winston & Strawn is looking to bring in four Miami summer associates next year, a firm representative said.

Kirkland posted a 2L summer program on its website but didn’t respond to questions on the size of the class, and Quinn Emanuel’s Miami office will launch its first summer program next year as well, co-managing partner Sam Williamson said in an interview last month.

Per Am Law, while Quinn Emanuel is definitely recruiting law students in Miami, the firm did not respond to a question regarding the size of its 2023 summer class. King & Spalding, which is also new to Miami as of January 2022, did not confirm the existence of an upcoming summer program.

As far as lateral associate hiring is concerned, Miami’s new Biglaw firms have been bulking up their ranks by poaching attorneys from other local firms. According to South Florida legal recruiter Joe Ankus, the hiring market is still on fire, and he has “five times as many jobs as people.”

South Beach is bringing the heat, so law students and lateral prospects better get ready to be wooed by Biglaw firms. Bienvenidos a Miami!
