A mischievous monkey recently baffled deputies by somehow making a 9-1-1 call to the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office.

According to a Facebook post from the California agency, dispatchers received an emergency call that disconnected soon after. After attempts to call and text the phone number back failed to elicit a reply, it was found to belong to the offices of Zoo to You in nearby Paso Robles — a nonprofit that brings animals to schools around California. Deputies were sent to that address to investigate.

Although workers at the 40-acre property said no one had made the call, they did suspect who may have been to blame — Route the capuchin monkey.

“Was someone trying to make us look like a monkey’s uncle?” the sheriff’s office joked.

Workers told deputies that the curious monkey probably picked up the zoo’s cellphone that was left inside a golf cart and began to play with it.

“We’re told Capuchin monkeys are very inquisitive and will grab anything and everything and just start pushing buttons,” deputies said.

While exploring the phone, Route accidentally ended up pressing the sequence of numbers to summon emergency services.

The post included pictures of Route looking decidedly innocent. “As you can tell from these photos, Route is a little embarrassed by the whole thing. But you can’t really blame her, after all monkey see, monkey do,” the office wrote.
