Top-level administrative professionals in law firms make anywhere from $77,000 to $2.7 million in total compensation, according to a recently released survey.

The survey found that the average base pay and bonus combined was $418,107 for chief operating officers and other principal administrators, Law.com reports.

The survey looked at base pay as of Jan. 1 and annual bonuses paid through March at 159 law firms.

The survey was conducted by Altman Weil in partnership with Rees Morrison, CEO of Savvy Surveys for Lawyers. A quarter of the respondents came from law firms with more than 190 lawyers.

Study co-author James Wilber, a principal at Altman Weil, told Law.com that law firms should base compensation for principal administrators on equity partner pay if they want to stay competitive. He said he sees pay ranging from 70% to 100% of the average compensation for equity partners.
