Port Chester police took several lizards into custody after they were mailed to a wrong address at a residence north of New York City.

Police received a strange call from a residence saying that they received a mysterious box that turned out to be full of lizards, and needed the police to come assess the situation.

It’s not clear which delivery service made the error, or who the lizards belong to.

“If you lost your lizards and iguanas we have them at the PD,” the Port Chester Police Department wrote on Facebook along with a picture of the three reptiles lying in a white container.

“Needless to say the addressee was quite startled when they opened the box,” police said.

Police said they kept the reptiles until a local animal sanctuary took them off their hands to take better care for them as they await their rightful owner.

“After catching all the animals, we secured them until a local animal sanctuary can pick them up for safekeeping,” police wrote. “Every day is different here in PC!”

Keeping nonvenomous reptiles as pets in New York is legal, as long as the species is not considered protected.

Port Chester is a village in Westchester County, NY, and is the fifth-most populous village in the state.
