An Arkansas off-duty officer who rescued a mother and her child after a car accident is being called a hero for his lifesaving actions.
Pine Bluff Officer Marvin Cawthon was passing a construction site on his way to North Little Rock to buy supplies for his second job as a barber when traffic suddenly stopped, and people began exiting their vehicles.
The off-duty officer knew something was wrong and immediately took action.
“I saw people get out of their vehicles [and] I thought this isn’t normal,” Cawthon described.
He then saw the wreck.
“I noticed that it was a black vehicle turned on its side, and I hear someone say, ‘There is a baby inside,’” Cawthon recalled.
The officer climbed on top of the vehicle to open the car door and was able to help the mother and her baby out of the car.
“He was bleeding [and] leaking blood from his head … there was blood coming from his face,” Cawthon described.
Cawthon then began to direct traffic.
“Here I am holding the baby, you know, directing traffic, because no one else was available,” Cawthon said.
The mom of the child later told Cawthon that he was her “guardian angel.”
“What are the chances of a [off-duty] police officer being in a spot where a police officer couldn’t get to at that very moment?” Cawthon said.
“It was an exit that I could have taken, [and] if I would have just gotten in the next lane, I could’ve gotten there and headed off,” Cawthon explained.
He also expressed his gratitude for being able to help the family.
He credited a divine force for putting him in the right place at the right time.
“It wasn’t anything that I’m taking credit for,” he said. “I wasn’t even supposed to be there at the moment, but clearly, I was supposed to be there.”
The mother told Cawthon that the child only suffered a minor injury and is doing well.
Ironically, the officer was in a car accident of his own weeks before when a car rammed him after failing to stop at a stop sign.
ER doctors said Cawthon suffered a minor concussion as a result.
