U.S. Capitol police officers recently helped deliver a baby girl after a pregnant woman went into labor outside the Hart Senate Office Building on September 7.

According to tweets from the department, USCP officers and paramedics with the Emergency Medical Services Department and the District of Columbia Fire Department were called to assist a local woman who had gone into labor in the front passenger seat of an SUV on Constitution Avenue — a famous street lined with museums and federal departments.

U.S. Capitol Police Captain Carneysha Mendoza was the first on the scene, along with K-9 technician Jacqueline Yaniga.

Mendoza said that the woman’s water broke as she was talking to her.

The proximity to the Capitol made the delivery undoubtedly a special and unforgettable experience for the mother.

“WHOA, BABY! This afternoon our officers helped a local mother give birth to her beautiful baby girl. Cheers could be heard from the U.S. Capitol Police Command Center when it happened around noon,” the Capitol Police tweeted.

The Capitol Police congratulated the mother and said both the child and mom were happy and healthy.

Police also credited fire and EMS teams for their “quick assistance.”

The mother has not yet been identified.
