There’s an ongoing internal investigation into a violent interaction between a Clark County School District Police Officer and a black teenager that occurred on February 9, 2023, at Durango High School. According to reports, an officer is accused of slamming the black minor to the ground and then kneeling on his back, which many parents and community members say was an abuse of power.
As a result of this news becoming public, a rights group, a chapter of the National Action Network, has been very vocal about their support of the teenage boy. The group is demanding not only an investigation into the ordeal but also for the involved officer to be fired from his position. This stance has only gained more and more traction since the video footage of the incident was quickly circulated on social media after the ordeal.
The officer, whose identity has not yet become public, is currently on administrative duty while an internal affairs review is conducted. A representative for the police, Clark County School District Police Department Chief Mike Blackeye, attended a recent rights group meeting and explained that there was a threat on the day of the incident.
The department had received a report of a weapon in the crowd just off campus, and they’d also received a threat regarding a shooting at the Durango basketball game scheduled for that day. The officer, according to Blackeye, was acting on this intel when the incident occurred.
