Tragically, a 17-year-old female lost her life on Friday morning after getting stuck by a U-Haul while she was riding on an electric scooter. According to initial reports, the incident occurred at around 10:30 A.M. Witnesses saw a white U-Haul traveling east on Sun Shadow Avenue. The truck then turned onto Pecos, where the 17-year-old was riding her scooter in the bike lane.
Unfortunately, the U-Haul truck went in front of the pedestrian who didn’t have time to stop before slamming into the truck. The Henderson Police Department confirmed that the truck driver says they did not see the pedestrian when the crash happened.
The 17-year-old was severely injured and quickly rushed to the nearby Sunrise Trauma center in critical condition. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her injuries shortly later.
Investigators initially suspect impairment may have played a major role in the crash, but they have not confirmed or denied whether those allegations proved to be true or not. The investigation remains ongoing.
How to Cope With the Many Losses Associated With DUI Wrongful Death Accidents
When someone loses their life, it’s always a tragedy. When that loss of life is sudden, unexpected, and the result of someone else’s very poor decisions, however, that loss can feel even more devastating. A wrongful death as a result of a DUI could lead to a windfall of financial losses for the victim’s loved ones including:
- Medical bills acquired prior to the fatality
- Burial expenses
- Other costs associated with the funeral
- Costs associated with closing the person’s estate
- A loss of support when that person was a breadwinner for a family or spouse
What’s more, the surviving loved ones are sure to have to deal with significant amounts of emotional distress and grief.
While nothing can bring back a lost loved one, there are laws in place that can help surviving family members seek financial justice after the ordeal. Loved ones can seek out a wrongful death claim against the driver who was at fault for the accident.
Under the law, every motorist has a legal duty to provide for the care and safety of everyone else on the road. If they fail to uphold that duty by driving recklessly, getting behind the wheel while intoxicated, or otherwise causing an accident, then the law will hold that person legally and financially responsible for the fallout of that accident.
In the event of a wrongful death, the at-fault driver will be held responsible for the losses associated with the fatality.
If you believe that your loved one’s death may have been the result of someone else’s negligent behavior, then it’s best to consult with an experienced wrongful death attorney about what happened. A quality lawyer will listen to what happened, analyze the facts, and then give you their honest take on whether your situation has the necessary elements to seek out a valid legal claim against the other party.
