RANCHO CUCAMONGA, Calif. (KABC) — Two people who were seriously injured in a crash in Rancho Cucamonga can thank their Apple device for their rescue.

The single-vehicle crash was reported around 2 a.m. Tuesday on the 15 Freeway. The driver and passenger became trapped in the car after slamming into a tree.

It was an Apple Watch that alerted emergency personnel about the gruesome crash. The relatively new feature from Apple immediately reached out to 911.

“Through the Apple Watch or the iPhone crash detection system, we received a location and our officers and first responders showed up on scene,” CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez said.

The feature also provides the emergency dispatcher with the coordinates of the crash.

“With those coordinates, we’re able to pretty much pinpoint where the vehicles are at,” Jimenez said. “This could definitely save some lives.”

Both men were taken to Arrowhead Regional Hospital in Colton. It’s unclear if there were other people in the car.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
